America in Crisis: Dwight Nelson鈥檚 Message of Warning and Hope Amid Division and Threats to Religious Liberty

Dwight Nelson, the longtime Seventh-day Adventist pastor of the Pioneer Memorial Church, recently retired after 40 years there. Yet, retirement hasn鈥檛 dimmed his passion. Instead, he is focused on living on the brink of eternity, the soon return of Jesus, and the undeniable challenges facing America鈥攕pecifically, religious liberty and the dangerous rise of Christian nationalism.
鈥淚鈥檓 grateful to be coming to PUC鈥攂ecause I believe young adults are the strategic key to waking America up to this critical moment in history,鈥 Nelson said in an interview. 鈥淲e as a nation are fractured on practically every level of life and culture鈥攔acially, spiritually, economically, politically, socially鈥攁nd I鈥檓 convinced the young are God鈥檚 essential endgame move to bring healing to America.鈥
On March 1-2, 海角视频 hosted the Northern California Conference鈥檚 (NCC) annual Religious Liberty Summit. The event centered on three powerful messages from Nelson and breakout workshops featuring several prominent presenters, including two Superior Court judges, a community organizer, the chief of staff for a California state senator, and a historian. The weekend event culminated in a panel discussion, fostering thought-provoking conversations on pressing religious liberty issues.
NCC has sponsored religious liberty events for several years鈥攖hree annually on this vital cause. These include the spring Religious Liberty Summit weekend, a Sabbath in July, and a fall brunch held at the conference headquarters鈥攁ll aimed at raising awareness and advocacy for religious freedom.
On Friday night, March 1, Nelson delivered the first message in his three-part series, 鈥淎merican Apocalypse: House by the Side of the Road,鈥 during a vespers at the PUC Church. He began by recalling a conversation from last Thanksgiving, where he asked friends and family gathered around the table, 鈥淲hat do you think America is going to be like next Thanksgiving?鈥 The response was a chorus of groans. His point? Regardless of the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, America will still be deeply divided.
鈥淚 need to be candid,鈥 Nelson said, his trademark folksy delivery taking on a serious tone. 鈥淚鈥檓 concerned about an entire wing of Christianity that has staked its existence鈥攁t least its future鈥攐n the outcome of this election coming up.鈥
Nelson highlighted the problem of blending politics and religion especially among evangelical Christians, which he noted in some ways could extend to Seventh-day Adventists. He urged people to reflect on their preoccupations: Are we elevating politicians to the status of idols, the way a teen might idolize a pop star? Are we investing quality time in the Bible and nurturing our relationship with Jesus, or are our energies consumed by politics and current events, draining our spiritual vitality?
During the second session on Sabbath morning, March 2, Nelson delved into the prophetic imagery of Revelation 13, focusing on the beast emerging from the earth with two horns resembling a lamb, but speaking like a dragon. He interpreted this as partly symbolizing what he terms the 鈥淎merican Apocalypse,鈥 where Christianity becomes intertwined with state authority, potentially threatening religious liberty and the U.S. Constitution.
Nelson reminded the group of the Adventist belief in the prophesied loss of our religious liberties in America, regardless of who eventually assumes leadership.
鈥溾楥hristian nationalism鈥 is a brash movement attempting to rewrite American history in hopes that church and state might be yet joined in a coalition to rule this country, both politically and legislatively,鈥 Nelson said by email ahead of the weekend series at PUC. 鈥淏ut as Jesus warned, 鈥楳y kingdom is not of this world.鈥欌
Nelson emphasized that Jesus is the sole source of hope. He referenced John 16:33, where Jesus promises peace through him amid challenges and disaster.
In his final message delivered at the church service, Nelson began with the sobering statistic that there has been a significant religious shift in America and shifting political divisions. 鈥淪o, what should we do?鈥 Nelson asked.
First, he emphasized the importance of believing and proclaiming the truth about Jesus. 鈥淵ou can take all the universal truth and put it into one sentence,鈥 Nelson said. 鈥淭he Maker of all things loves and wants me.鈥 He shared verses from the book of John to underscore God鈥檚 unconditional love for all.
Drawing from 鈥淐hrist鈥檚 Object Lessons鈥 by Ellen White, Nelson spoke about this current era of misunderstanding God鈥檚 character and the need to spread his message of love.
鈥淎t this time, a message from God is to be proclaimed, a message illuminating in its influence and saving in its power,鈥 Nelson read from White. 鈥淭he last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the world, is a revelation of His character of love.鈥
Nelson said that White emphasized the significance of practical actions over mere words in sharing Jesus' message. Our responsibility goes beyond meeting physical needs to addressing spiritual ones, fulfilled only by the love of Jesus.
Encouraging everyone, particularly students, Nelson suggested engaging in acts of kindness, such as visiting the inner city to pray with people and meeting needs through initiatives like basketball camps, teaching English to migrants, and providing job skills training.聽
In his closing remarks, Nelson shared an excerpt from the autobiography of Malcolm X, recalling his mother's positive encounters with Seventh-day Adventists. Eventually, Malcolm X and his mother began attending Adventist meetings. He observed that the church was predominantly white but found the Adventists to be the friendliest white people he had ever encountered.
Reflecting on Malcolm X鈥檚 experience, Nelson again emphasized the importance of modeling love.
鈥淟ove on people,鈥 he said, 鈥淪ay 鈥榯he Maker of all things loves and wants me, and I want you to know He loves and wants you too.鈥欌
On Sabbath afternoon, several workshops were held across the PUC campus. The first workshop, "Service to God and of Service to Man," featured Judge Marla O. Anderson, Judge Allison M. Williams, Aaron Brieno, a California legislative aide, and Alan Reinach. Reinach, director of public affairs and religious liberty at the Pacific Union Conference, served as moderator.
The second workshop, "Community Organizing for Church Leaders," was led by Daniel Rodela, a professional fundraiser and faith-based community organizer. Finally, historian Leigh Johnsen led the third workshop, "The Case Against Christian Nationalism."
The Religious Liberty Summit concluded with a panel discussion at the PUC Church, featuring Anderson, Brieno, Johnsen, Nelson, Reinach, Rodela, and Marc Woodson, president of the Northern California Conference. Attorney Steve Allred, the NCC鈥檚 religious liberty liaison, facilitated the discussion.
In an interview by email, Allred said the summit at PUC is timely and relevant not just for the college community but also for Seventh-day Adventists and the nation at large.
鈥淎dventists have a uniquely biblical understanding of religious liberty, and our view is one that can add a lot to the discourse in our country regarding religious liberty,鈥 he said. 鈥淗istorically, Adventists have been proponents of the separation of church and state.鈥
But that idea is increasingly under attack, he said, from other Christians and certain political groups.
鈥淥n the other hand, we Adventists also believe in getting involved and making society better.聽 We鈥檝e been involved in promoting societal morality and justice, including, for example, the abolition of slavery and advocating against coercive religious Sunday laws in the 1800s and the prohibition of alcohol in the early 20th century,鈥 Allred said. 鈥淭his nuanced position on religious liberty is not often heard in our world, and we need to be sharing it.鈥
Nelson agrees. Christians can be engaged in politics and government. Voting itself is an engagement in the world.
鈥淏ut any effort to turn the government into a spiritual-political confederacy to legislate Christian doctrine in this nation is doomed even before it starts. Because 鈥楥hristian nationalism鈥 (or theocracy) is precisely what the Founding Fathers worked so diligently to prevent in creating the Constitution of the United States and its First Amendment,鈥 Nelson said.
鈥淲hile 鈥楥hristian nationalism鈥 may end up being where America ends up, for very different reasons, it is vital we, too, engage this culture鈥攏ot to weaponize our political ends, not to win votes for our ideology鈥攂ut rather to win the hearts of Americans of every persuasion, to win new friends for Jesus before He comes again.鈥
