PUC Again Earns Gold Status from NAIA

The National Association of Intercollegiate 海角视频 (NAIA) has released its Champions of Character Scorecard for the 2017-18 season, and 海角视频 has again received Gold Status.Every year, each NAIA institution and conference demonstrate their progress in pursuing character-driven athletics. The Champions of Character Scorecard measures growth in training, promotion, conduct in competition and commitment in five key areas with a possibility of earning 100 points. Institutions can be recognized as Champions of Character Five-Star Institutions at three different levels: Gold (90-100 points), Silver (75-89 points) and Bronze (60-74 points).This year 171 NAIA institutions earned the Five-Star Institution Award, including 74 at the gold distinction level, one of which was 海角视频.鈥淎ll of the credit for achieving NAIA gold level status goes to the athletes, coaches, and athletic director from last year,鈥 acknowledges Ralph Perrin, PUC鈥檚 new athletics director since September of this year. 鈥淭he NAIA and the CalPac Conference have put a lot of emphasis on the development of a lifestyle in athletes that helps them live at a higher level of moral discernment and engagement. Brazilian Doctor Adventurer Karina Oliani to Speak at PUC

Due to an unexpected weather situation, Oliani will be unable to make it to her scheduled speaking event at PUC on Saturday evening. Her presentation will be rescheduled and announced as soon as possible.On Saturday, Oct. 27, Brazilian physician and adventurer Karina Oliani will speak at 海角视频. This event is free and open to the public.Born with a thirst for adrenaline-pumping adventure, Oliani completed both her first parachute jump and her scuba diving training at age 12. By 17, she was a two-time Brazilian wakeboard champion, a three-time snowboard champion, a record-holding free diver.Oliani has mastered many sports, including rock climbing, motocross, canoeing, paddle boarding, abseiling, horseback riding, surfing, orienteering, kitesurfing, sandboarding, water and alpine skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, and bungee jumping. She also has her private helicopter pilot license.Throughout this sporting, however, Oliani has also fed her passion for service. Combining it with her love of adventure, she acquired her medical degree and now travels the world in search of both caring for others and exploring her own physical limits. PUC Announces Another Eight Years of Accreditation from WASC

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) has reaffirmed another eight years of accreditation for 海角视频, affirming that PUC has met the Commission鈥檚 high standards of quality and effectiveness.鈥淲e are very pleased at the outcome of the reaffirmation of our accreditation,鈥 President Robert Cushman said. 鈥淢aintaining accreditation is incredibly important, as it validates that we are creatingthe bestpossiblelearning environmentforourstudentstoachievetheireducationalgoals.鈥漈he announcement comes after the Commission evaluated the College鈥檚 institutional report and conducted a three-day on-site review in April 2018.鈥淥ur long relationship with WASC鈥攚e were first accredited in 1951鈥攃ontinues to strengthen the academic program and reaffirm our commitment to student success,鈥 adds Vice President for Academic Administration, Nancy Lecourt. On August 2, 海角视频 (PUC) announced its commitment and support of a transfer pathway between the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU) and the California Community Colleges Chancellor鈥檚 Office.The pathway is designed for college students graduating with an Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or an Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) from a California community college and wishing to transfer to a four-year independent, nonprofit institution like PUC. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the AICCU President Kristen Soares and California Community College鈥檚 Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley to further strengthen the commitment of California鈥檚 independent nonprofit higher education sector toward the access and success of students, and affordability of quality education across the state.This pathway is the AICCU sector鈥檚 adoption of the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) pathway between the California Community Colleges and the California State University (CSU) system. Pastor Michael B. Kelly II Speaks for Annual Winter Revival

For its annual winter revival week of prayer, 海角视频 welcomed Pastor Michael B. Kelly II to the pulpit, January 22-26. Meetings were held each evening, with a special Colloquy service on Thursday morning, January 25. His powerful words and message brought a blessing to all who attended the meetings and resonated with faculty, staff, and students alike.For the last several years, Pastor Kelly has served as the senior pastor at Mt. Rubidoux Seventh-day Adventist Church in Riverside, Calif. Previously, he served as senior pastor for several churches in Colorado, and in Lincoln, Neb., where he also taught a Christian Ethics course at Union College. His ministry has taken him throughout the United States and around the globe, including giving a seminar in the Philippines that resulted in 120 baptisms, and leading in several weeks of spiritual emphasis in England and Kenya. Recognizing the financial difficulties families face when planningfor college, PUC has strengthened its commitment to make a Seventh-dayAdventist liberal arts education accessible and affordable to all admitted students.PUC鈥檚 new STEM Scholarship recognizes first-time freshmen who have obtained a strong understanding of and competence in advanced mathematics and science during high school. Recipients must have completed three years of college preparatory laboratory courses (biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy & physiology) and three years of college preparatory math courses (intermediate/advanced algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, geometry, and statistics) to receive the $1,000 renewable award. PUC Resumes Classes After Wildfire Concerns

Today students return to the 海角视频 campus after a week-long hiatus. In an act of caution, last Tuesday, October 10, PUC canceled classes, closed non-essential offices, and encouraged students to return home to their families while first responders and emergency personnel from across the country worked on containing the wildfires spanning Napa and Sonoma counties and throughout Northern California. 鈥淓ven with the continued assurance of Angwin鈥檚 safety from local fire professionals, it gave PUC鈥檚 senior leadership team extra peace of mind knowing the majority of our students were far from the situation,鈥 said Jennifer Tyner, vice president of student life, enrollment, and marketing. 鈥淭he outpouring of love and support from the community to our remaining students, faculty, and staff was uplifting during this trying time for our campus.鈥 Among the responders working tirelessly to contain the wildfires were several PUC students who volunteer with the local Angwin Volunteer Fire Department, along with many college staff and faculty members, including J.R. PUC at Soquel and Redwood Camp Meetings This Summer

This summer, representatives from 海角视频 will travel to Soquel Camp Meeting and Redwood Camp Meeting to fellowship and worship together with college alumni and friends. At Soquel Camp Meeting, which runs from July 13-22, is the Central California Conference鈥檚 annual gathering near Santa Cruz, Calif., at the Soquel Conference Center. PUC representatives will be helping in the youth tent as well as answering questions and sharing information about the college at the PUC booth. On Sabbath, July 22, the PUC alumni team will host a luncheon in the Earliteen tent following the church service. Held by the Northern California Conference, Redwood Camp Meeting is located in the beautiful forest of Redcrest, Calif., and runs from July 20-29. As in previous years, PUC representatives will be helping all week in the youth tent as well as staff the PUC booth to talk with alumni, friends, and potential students, with information about the college and special giveaways on hand. On May 11, 2017, the 海角视频 Board of Trustees announced Dr. Robert A. Cushman Jr. has been selected as the new president of 海角视频. Cushman currently serves as the vice president for academic administration for Walla Walla University in Walla Walla, Wash., and has spent the last 26 years in Adventist education serving in various capacities. He will begin his role as president July 1, in preparation for the new academic year, and will be the college鈥檚 twenty-third president in its 135-year history. Cushman received his Ph.D. in geology from the Colorado School of Mines, his master鈥檚 degree in geology at Loma Linda University, and his bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology at Walla Walla College (now University). After spending five years as a geologist and paleontologist, Cushman felt God鈥檚 calling to educate young minds. In the 12 years he taught at Loma Linda University, he served as assistant professor, associate department chair, and the department chair of the department of earth and biological sciences, where he taught graduate level courses, conducted research in Western Colorado and Wyoming, and advised graduate student research. PUC Men鈥檚 Basketball Makes First Appearance at NAIA National Tournament

On Wednesday, March 8, the eighth-seeded 海角视频 Pioneers men鈥檚 basketball team took on the first-seeded Cornerstone University Golden Eagles in the opening round of the 26th annual NAIA Division II Men鈥檚 Basketball National Championship at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo. After a dominating first half, PUC鈥檚 run came to an abrupt halt when Cornerstone took control over the final 20 minutes to pull out an 89-83 win. Despite their heartbreaking lost, the Pioneers raised eyebrows and turned heads at the national level with a stellar performance for their first appearance in the NAIA national tournament. The Pioneers, who had won their last eight games鈥攖he last three by a combined total of six points that included two buzzer-beaters鈥攃ame out hitting on all cylinders, shooting almost 64 percent in the opening half, including 10 of 17 from the 3-point line.
