Winners Announced in PUC鈥檚 First High School Essay Contest

The department of English at 海角视频 held its first annual Emerging Voices of the Pacific Union essay contest. The contest began on March 12 to high school students from Seventh-day Adventist academies or junior academies in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.Students had until April 21 to submit a personal essay about a time they found beauty in an everyday or unexpected place. Approximately 80 entries were received and judged by PUC English professors to choose three winners.PUC is happy to congratulate and share the winners of the Emerging Voices essay contest: 1st place is Joshua Nielson, a senior from Rio Linda Academy, who wrote an essay titled Whispers of a Ghost Town about a town called Bodie and finding true beauty within the legacy of towns. Judges were greatly impressed with Nielson鈥檚 strong sense of description and place and the unusual approach he took to thinking about beauty and discovery. His work is a fantastic representation of the beauty of California, and his voice as a writer shines through. Nielsen will receive a $1000 scholarship and a $500 prize. 2nd place is Yieby Shade, a junior from San Gabriel Academy, whose essay Layered In Between is about...
Remembering the Life of Allison Fox

海角视频 and the Angwin community are deeply saddened by the loss of Allison Fox, PUC alum, access services librarian, and Honors program director, who passed away surrounded by her family on May 9 in Angwin, California.鈥淎llison did a fantastic job taking care of our Honors students and making sure they had a great academic experience at PUC,鈥 said Milbert Mariano, PUC vice president for academic administration and academic dean. 鈥淪he did an excellent job preparing each of our students for the life of a Christian scholar. I am proud of the work she did and know many will miss her zest for life greatly.鈥澛燜ox was born at St. Helena Hospital to Cheryl and Chuck Fox. She grew up in Angwin, along with sisters Heidi and Lizzie. She attended both PUC Elementary and PUC Preparatory Academy and was a lifelong member of the PUC Church.聽When she started college at PUC, Fox was a student worker for two years in the campus bookstore. She then worked for two more years at the Nelson Memorial Library, often in the archives with the Walter Utt collection. In 2001, she graduated from PUC with a B.A. in English. PUC Film Students Win at the 2023 Sonscreen Film Festival

Sonscreen Film Festival is an event hosted by the North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for over the past 20 years. It brings together Adventist filmmakers to celebrate excellence in film, encourage new work, and has always had a strong focus on student filmmakers, with our Adventist college students being involved from the very beginning.聽Over the years, Rajeev Sigamoney, chair of the visual arts department, has attended the film festival and helped run the event. Now, he proudly takes 海角视频 students to Sonscreen every year. 鈥淭he connections and community have been deeply valuable to my artistic journey and career and I hope that it might be the same for the students,鈥 said Sigamoney. 鈥淣ot to mention, as a department, we love the time away from the campus spending time together and going deeper in our relationships.鈥滿ore than 20 PUC film students represented the college, along with professors Sigamoney and Tim de la Torre. Susan Bussell is 海角视频鈥檚 2023 Educator of the Year

Professor of Nursing Susan Bussell was honored as 海角视频 Educator of the Year at a special Community program in the PUC Church on May 18.Milbert Mariano, vice president for academic administration and academic dean, said Bussell demonstrates the highest level of professionalism and expertise in her field. 鈥淪he's a true advocate for nursing education, and her enthusiasm for the profession is evident in her work with students,鈥 he said. 鈥淪he has a gift for inspiring and motivating her students and has been a mentor to many young nurses throughout her career as an educator.鈥 This year marks the second time in the college鈥檚 history that a professor of nursing has been selected as the Educator of the Year. Last year鈥檚 honoree, Professor of Nursing Serah Choi, spoke about her journey from being a nurse to becoming an educator and looking to Jesus as her mentor. Angwin to Angwish Trail Run

After a four-year hiatus, the annual Angwin to Angwish trail run made a triumphant return to 海角视频. Due to wildfire threats and the COVID-19 pandemic, 2018 was the last time this event was held.But early on a sunshine-filled Sunday, May 7, 100 runners of all ages from the college and in the greater community gathered atop the mountain to run and have fun. All funds from the race went to support the PUC department of athletics.Race director Abraham Garrido, also PUC鈥檚 head coach for both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 cross-country teams, said he was surprised and excited about the number of participants. 鈥淭hey all had a great time, and that's something that stood out,鈥 he said.Angwin to Angwish, which began in 1974, is a beautiful forested trail run through PUC鈥檚 backwoods property. This year鈥檚 event offered four races of varied difficulty and terrain. PUC and Adventist Health Expand Nursing Program to Lake and Mendocino Counties

海角视频 and Adventist Health have announced a new partnership to better serve rural communities in Central and Northern California, including in Lake and Mendocino counties. This collaboration will further the college's goals of growing its nursing program and help meet the rising need for highly qualified healthcare professionals in these areas. 鈥淧artnering with nursing schools is the best way for hospitals to ensure there is a pipeline for recruitment of nurses,鈥 said PUC Department of Nursing Chair Kimberly Dunker. 鈥淏ecause of the long-standing history between our Adventist organizations, we are able to not only partner but share the same values and beliefs for nursing education and talent acquisition.鈥 The Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program will be open to Adventist Health employees and community members in the local areas of Lake and Mendocino counties looking to move into the nursing field. Classes will begin in September. World Languages Department Redesigns Language & Culture Studies BA

海角视频 is excited about the new interdisciplinary, customizable Language & Culture Studies BA. In the new program, students select a language emphasis plus a second area selected from a large list 鈥 or they can propose their own second emphasis.聽鈥淲e have very creative students out there who see the connection between Italian and music, but maybe also between Spanish and environmental science, for example,鈥 says Chair and Professor of World Languages Sylvia Rasi Gregorutti. 鈥淲e all love to have an individualized, 鈥榗urated,鈥 experience鈥攕o this is the equivalent in a B.A. degree!鈥漈he Language & Culture Studies B.A. includes an academic year of study abroad at a host campus, amazing trips in the tuition itself, and the degree is structured so as to be easily combined with a second major. 鈥淚 would have been so excited to have an option like this as a student鈥攕o at least now I鈥檓 able to create and offer it!鈥 shares Gregorutti.聽Since PUC is a member of the Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA) consortium, the department offers a degree encompassing experiences at host campuses abroad where coursework is offered in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. PUC Recognizes Student-Athletes at Awards Banquet

Student-athletes are the penultimate students on campus in part because they have so much to juggle. If you ask Pioneers at 海角视频 what the hardest part about being a student-athlete is, they will say balancing time between school and sports. During a regular sports season, they must balance homework, class, labs, and extracurriculars鈥攁ll while honing their athletic craft with all their practices, conditioning, weightlifting, games, and travels.聽They are also leaders and are often the public face of the college more than other students. While at PUC, they鈥檝e experienced a lot of pressure to achieve, and these students have done so at very high levels. Many of PUC鈥檚 student-athletes are in the 3.5+ and 4.0 range.聽A fantastic 85% of student-athletes were awarded at the Pioneers Athlete Awards Banquet April 30 at the Angwin Fire Station. This annual awards banquet recognizes the Pioneers athletes for all their hard work throughout the year. Student-athletes receive sports-related and academic-based awards. PUC鈥檚 Ninth Mission Trip to Fiji: Building Relationships with Service and Love

In March, over spring vacation, a group of students and faculty from 海角视频 traveled to Mana Island, Fiji, for a 10-day mission trip.It鈥檚 been nearly a decade since the first PUC trip to this remote location. Mana is very small, with only a population of about 500 people. Each mission trip has focused on meeting their needs in a variety of areas. A deep connection between PUC and the community has developed with each return trip to the island.Under the leadership of former Missions Director Fabio Maia and two co-leaders, Biology Professor Floyd Hayes and Nursing Professor Sandra Ringer, this year鈥檚 mission trip included 12 nursing students and three non-nursing students. Week of Prayer Pastor Addresses Difficult Topics with Empathy and Encouragement

When pastors address a difficult subject in their messages, they must do so with great care and preparation, especially if there are no easy answers. It鈥檚 not often that a pastor addresses five complex topics in a week. But Pastor Josie Ascencio did precisely that.聽海角视频 held its annual spring Week of Prayer from April 17-21. Students led out in praise and worship songs and icebreaker activities each day. Ascencio, head pastor of the Antioch Seventh-day Adventist Church, spoke on the year鈥檚 theme of 鈥淩evival.鈥 Her topics included brokenness, isolation, and despair鈥攁nd the importance of building community and connection by reaching out. Each message centered on a biblical story of physical and emotional healing. Ascencio began with the story of Jacob, who was far from perfect and so concerned with himself that he even swindled his father out of his brother鈥檚 birthright. But then, Ascencio said, came the struggle in the desert and the dream revealing angels descending and ascending a ladder from heaven to earth.
