From January 21 to 24, 海角视频 and PUC Preparatory hosted 450 students and sponsors for the Pioneers Invitational Academy Basketball Tournament.
With PUC Preparatory, participating schools were:
- Hawaiian Mission Academy
- Pine Tree Academy
- San Diego Academy
- Escondido Adventist Academy
- Redlands Adventist Academy
- Newbury Park Adventist Academy
- Central Valley Christian Academy
- Rio Lindo Academy
- Monterey Bay Academy
- Mountain View Academy
- Pleasant Hill Adventist Academy
- Lodi Academy
- Sacramento Adventist Academy
- Paradise Adventist Academy
- Pine Hills Adventist Academy
Academies were greeted with merch, dorm necessities, and cookies, each with a note from PUC’s men's and women’s basketball teams, as they arrived on campus. Tournament organizers, PUC Executive Assistant and Enrollment Counselor Andrianna Massena, and PUC Prep Athletic Director Matt Lee ensured students, coaches, and parents had an enjoyable time during their four days on campus.
Massena and Lee also made special arrangements to have catered food from local restaurants in St. Helena for coaches, referees, and sponsors from Gott’s Burgers, Guigni’s Deli, and Azteca Market. The coaches also received gifts from the kinesiology department, which Aimee Wyrick, Dean of the School of Sciences, personally gave.
PUC student Kaia Miller also assisted during the event by coordinating books and scorekeepers and keeping the gymnasium clean. “She [Kaia] is such an advocate for PUC, and it shines through during these events,” said Massena. For students and parents, there was a snack room in the gymnasium that was always stocked with free snacks to enjoy between and during games.
Central Valley Christian Academy and Pine Hills Adventist Academy kicked off the boys’ competition at 9 a.m. At the same time, the Mountain View Academy and Rio Lindo Academy girls’ teams started the girls' competition.
At the end of the tournament, the girls' team from Escondido Adventist Academy won first place, with Sacramento Adventist Academy in second and Hawaiian Mission Academy in third. Redlands Adventist Academy won first place in the boys competition, with Newbury Park Adventist Academy second and Sacramento Adventist Academy third.
In addition to the games, many students attended a panel hosted by PUC Athletic Director Tony Nakashima and Basketball Coach Landon Banks, which discussed playing at the next level and was found informative by many students. They also had the chance to socialize with other students during Friday night worship and to meet different PUC administrators, faculty, and staff who kindly opened their homes to host Sabbath lunches for the academies.
From administration, PUC President Ralph Trecartin and his wife, Virginia, hosted Sacramento Adventist Academy, Vice President for Financial Administration Joy Hirdler and her husband, Gary, hosted PUC Preparatory, Vice President of Student and Spiritual Life Aimee Leukert and Music Professor Kristian Leukert hosted Redlands Adventist Academy, and Vice President of Alumni and Advancement Carlos Garcia hosted Escondido Adventist Academy.
Both San Diego Academy and Lodi Academy were hosted by Director of Recruitment Isabella Malan-Garrido and Enrollment Counselor Abraham Garrido, while Lead Pastor Nate Furness and his wife, Jennie, hosted Pine Tree Academy, and Youth and Associate Pastor Garrison Chaffee and Chief Flight Instructor Merilyn Chaffee hosted Paradise Adventist Academy. PUC alumni and community members also opened their homes to Monterey Bay Academy, Central Valley Christian Academy, Newbury Park Adventist Academy, and Mountain View Academy.
Just as students and coaches had a good time with their hosts, the tournament was a huge success. Coaches expressed their gratitude for PUC’s warm hospitality and said their students enjoyed themselves. “Between the time they got to share on the court mixed with the worship elements and other events, I hope PUC left an impression on each of them,” said Massena. “I hope they see there is a place for them here to grow academically, spiritually, physically, and more, should they choose to come to PUC.”
